Did you know that six of the top 20 selling books on Amazon, currently, are adult coloring books?
Coloring sheets for adults are extremely therapeutic and can help generate mental relaxation, mindfulness, and bring you back into the present moment. Essentially, coloring sheets are the “new wave” of meditation.
Creativity has been a major player in my life. I truly believe we are all artists, but somehow the label of “I’m not creative” has infiltrated our mindset. We think if we aren’t painters, photographers, dancers or film makers that we aren’t “creative”.
Creativity is all about expressing yourself. There is no right OR wrong way to go about it. Whatever energy and intention you put into creating is perfectly enough. Honestly, even if you scribbled one big black blob on the page, as long as you expressed energy that needs releasing, it will promote self-expression and healing.
Over the past year, I’ve been given 5 (seriously!) coloring books from friends and family. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to color and create, but is there some kind of theme going on? Did I miss the memo? 😉

“There is a long history of people coloring for mental health reasons,” Michaelis says. “Carl Jung used to try to get his patients to color in mandalas at the turn of the last century, as a way of getting people to focus and to allow the subconscious to let go. Now we know it has a lot of other stress-busting qualities as well.”
I was chatting with a friend of mine who does amazing henna and doodle work when it hit me. I wanted to share this tool of creativity and relaxation with my tribe. My girlfriend was kind enough to sketch up a beautiful series of mandala coloring sheets for me to share with you. I was inspired to add an intention to the mandala to help keep your mind free of self-judgement while you’re freely expressing your creativity.
What the heck is a mandala you ask?
Mandala means “sacred circle” in Sanskrit.
Why are circles believed to be so powerful?
- The circle is a symbol of wholeness, continuity, connection, unity, harmony and the cycle of life.
- Unlike other shapes, the circle flows and has no hard edges or angles.
- Circles are believed to help individuals focus inward, creating space for a spiritual journey
It’s a simple geometric shape that has no beginning or end. Within its circular shape, the mandala has the power to promote relaxation, balance the body’s energies, enhance your creativity, and support healing. The great news is you can achieve all of these benefits while having fun!
The mandala is a circular matrix with a center point—a point from which all things are possible. From this sacred center comes infinite possibilities + unlimited potential. How to get started:
- You will need crayons, colored pencils, paints, pastels, or markers in multiple colors.
- Find a quiet and comfortable place where you will not be interrupted. Turn off your cell phone and flip on some relaxing music.
- Take a moment to relax your mind and body by taking three deep breaths. Breathe in love and breathe out tension and fear.
- Don’t give much thought to the colors you choose or if they match, let your intuition choose. There is no wrong way to color.
- Once you are finished coloring in the mandala take a moment to look at it. Notice the colors, the shapes and how they make you feel. You may also find that getting out your journal and recording your thoughts may be helpful.
