What is something that someone who is struggling with body issues could start doing to begin to move them in a direction where they can learn to love themselves again even if they feel shame or guilt?
Self-love is often overlooked when it comes to weight loss and fitness. As a former nutrition coach, I had many clients who would come to me looking for a quick fix, wanting a nutrition or workout plan without considering the bigger picture. But the truth is, true transformation comes from within. It’s about how you feel about yourself and your relationship with yourself.
I used to focus solely on the external, following what society tells us about changing our bodies. However, a couple of years ago, I began to shift my focus towards having a better relationship with myself. I started to nourish all aspects of myself, including my mind, body, and spirit. As a result, I began to feel good enough about myself that I no longer turned to food as a source of comfort. I learned that self-love is the foundation for any significant change in our lives.
Can you speak about some of the power of breathwork and how do you help people with that?
As I continue on my journey, I’ve discovered the importance of holding space for others with the things that were once helpful for me. One of those things was breathwork. Throughout my life, I’ve struggled with being an overthinker and over-stressor, constantly putting pressure on myself. With all that mind energy, I needed to find a way to ground myself better. Breath work has become an ongoing practice for me that helps quiet my mind when I feel overwhelmed and anxious.
About a year and a half ago, I attended a three-day breathwork and meditation retreat, which was a game-changer for me. It was only my second experience with breath work, but it brought up trauma and memories from over a decade ago that my body had been holding onto. It was an eye-opening experience that made me realize how much we can hold without even realizing it. Now, I hold space for others to experience the transformative power of breathwork and meditation, knowing firsthand how life-changing it can be.
What does the journey of experiencing burnout look like even when you’re consciously crafting your life and doing what you love? Can you explain how it’s possible to feel overwhelmed or overworked despite making a significant impact in your career and relationships?
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly striving for success and pushing ourselves to the point of burnout. As someone who has experienced this cycle many times before, I’ve come to realize that the key to avoiding burnout is slowing down and embracing the process. It’s important to ask ourselves what voice or behavior is driving us to make certain decisions, and whether we’re truly finding joy in our day-to-day experiences.
For me, a big part of avoiding burnout has been giving myself permission to have more joy in my life. Rather than constantly chasing success, I’m learning to prioritize peace, passion, and joy in my daily pursuits. This shift in mindset has helped me to quiet the voice in my head that tells me I’m not good enough or that I need to do more. By focusing on the process and finding joy in the journey, I’m able to avoid burnout and live a more fulfilling life.
