3 Tips to Lead Your Emotions Instead of Being Led By Them

Tip 1: Separate the Sensation from the Story

Every emotion starts as a physical sensation in the body like tightness in the chest, a knot in the stomach, or a lump in the throat. The problem isn’t the emotion itself. The problem is the story we immediately attach to it. A simple feeling of anxiety can quickly turn into “something is wrong with me.” Feeling hurt can spiral into “I’m not enough.” That’s when we give our power away. Emotions are signals from your nervous system, not emergencies. They’re data, not instructions. The key to emotional leadership is learning to pause long enough to notice the sensation without immediately turning it into a narrative about your life. When you can separate what you’re physically feeling from the story your mind wants to tell about it, you create space to respond intentionally instead of reacting automatically. 

Tip 2: Expand Your Capacity Instead of Controlling the Emotion

One of the biggest mistakes people make with emotions is trying to control, suppress, or fix them. But emotions don’t respond well to force. They respond to leadership. Sometimes that leadership looks incredibly simple like taking a slow breath, relaxing your shoulders, unclenching your jaw, and allowing the feeling to exist without immediately reacting. When you signal to your nervous system that you’re safe, the emotional intensity begins to soften on its own. Your real power is in staying grounded while emotions move through you. That capacity is what keeps you steady in conflict, calm under pressure, and clear-headed when everyone else around you is losing it. The next time a big emotion hits, pause. Take a breath. Let the tension drop from your body. 

Tip 3: Decide from Your Higher Identity, Not Your Triggered Self

When emotions flare up, most people react from the version of themselves that feels hurt, defensive, or threatened. That’s the ego doing what it was trained to do. The challenge there though is that many of those patterns were formed by watching the people around us growing up. If conflict meant yelling, shutting down, or avoiding the issue entirely, those responses can become automatic. Emotional leadership asks something different of us. Instead of reacting from the triggered version of yourself, pause and ask a simple question: What would the grounded version of me do right now? The version of you that is calm, aligned, and acting with integrity. Sometimes that looks like saying, “I need a moment to process.” Sometimes it’s reminding yourself, “This situation doesn’t define my worth.” The more you practice responding from that higher identity, the easier it becomes to stay kind, empathetic, and steady, even when emotions are running high.
