Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work and What to Do Instead
You Have to Decide Who You Want to Be
The person you want to become takes on different actions typically than the person you are right now. So when you decide who you want to be, the action becomes more automatic and is built into what you’re already doing. If you want different results, you have to start showing up differently. That’s why you’ve got to start focusing on who it is that you want to show up as this year.
Purge What’s Not in Alignment
If you’re going to show up as this new version that you’re moving into, you have to let go and release all the things holding you back. We’ve got to purge things from the closet, from our beliefs, mindset, and emotions. There are things that you’re going to have to let go of to be who you really want to be. Make sure you’re purging yourself because you can’t jump into who you want to be, still carrying the baggage and habits from the last year.
Modify Your Routine
The habits that you do daily determine your life. Once you figure out your habits, you need structure and routine because we all have the same 24 hours. It’s up to you to decide how you’ll allocate your time and your energy within that time frame to make the most of it. So if you want to make really big, radical changes, all those changes happen inside your routine. It’s not something that you just do once or on the weekend.
It’s so important to educate yourself because when you’re moving into a new habit, routine, experience, or job, you have to learn something new. It’s outside of our comfort zone. But just like anything in your life, you had to learn it at one point. You’re going to have to learn something new if you want to make something new happen in your life. Trial and error so you can figure out what works for you and what doesn’t until you have something perfectly laid out.
Support the People That Are Close to You
Ask them, who do you want to show up as this year? Express to your friends and family that you want to help whatever they’re facing and want to change. Help walk that path a little bit because many people on this journey feel alone while doing new things that feel uncomfortable.
