Self-love isn’t just about hot Epsom salt baths and affirmations. Self-love requires you to get honest with your emotions and confront your darkness. 

As a salon owner and the founder of Shine School®, this is a topic that’s very important to me. Without confidence, it’s hard to go after your dreams. So many of us are waking up to the fact that we have a soul mission, and if we don’t have confidence in ourselves, then we might not ever step up to our greatness!

1. Periodic Check-ins: “Am I Okay?”

I recently saw a video of Meghan Markle where a reporter asked her “Are you okay?” and she vulnerably shared that no one has really asked her that. 

This was such a beautiful teaching moment. If even a princess isn’t getting asked this question, it becomes even more clear how important it is for us to regularly ask ourselves this question as an act of self-love.

Women often avoid asking themselves this question because they’re scared of shining a light in dark places and realizing that things might not be perfect. If we can accept the things that are imperfect, the magic starts to happen. 

Take action: Try setting a reminder on your phone to check in with yourself once a week. Just create an alarm that says “Am I okay?” and spend a few minutes reflecting on how you truly feel. 

2. Find Your “Power Outfit”

The way that you dress, the way you do your hair, the lipstick that you wear – it all contributes to the energy behind our confidence.

One of Chris’s friends was feeling pretty down about himself a couple of years ago and came to Chris for some advice about how to shift his mindset. Chris encouraged him to find a power color and wear it to an upcoming wedding. This guy walked into the wedding with a pink shirt on seeming like a completely different person! Adopting a “power color” instantly boosted his energy and confidence.

What is your “power color”? What can you wear that will instantly make you feel energized and more like yourself?

To dive into this, I recommend the book Magical Fashionista. It shows you how to wear different colors to activate different energies. For example, the color yellow helps to activate your solar plexus which is connected to your willpower and happiness.

Take action: Go through your closet and get rid of anything that makes you feel frumpy or less than confident about yourself! Then make it a goal to invest in more pieces that make you feel powerful and confident.

3. List your positive qualities on paper!

We are bombarded by thoughts and outside messages each day, and so many of them are overwhelmingly negative. If our internal talk is negative, we start to look at our entire life in a negative way. 

You have to take action to shift your mindset by focusing on the positive. By focusing on all of the positive aspects of yourself, you are actively building protection from the negative inner thoughts and outside messages that you receive every day.

Take action: Put your phone down for this one! Grab a pen and paper and add one or two positive things about yourself every day for a month until you have a whole list of how badass you are!
